a trip back to my Hometown

As a good lot of you know im from Buffalo ,New York.  any chance i get, i love going home to visit the water front and the down town area. but this particular visit, i brought my neighbor, she lived in the south towns for a few years but never really went down town. it was a great adventure..for me, and i do believe she loved it as well. She like most people (who arent from Bflo.)  have no clue how much it has changed ,and now recognized as a tourist destination. and it also has one of the longest bike runs and lake view parks, at least in North America.

i only wish i had original pics of what buffalo’s’ water front  looked like when i was growing up. unless you worked on the docks, in one of the gain mills, or at the steel mill..or a vagrant..you really didnt go by the water..  contamination at its highest level.

the water is clean, and used widely for recreation of all kinds. they still get some big grain ships coming through from time to time, but not like the old days, even in the ’70s you could still see ocean vessels coming in to load and unload.

the boat in this pic. is a history tour. ive taken b4, and would have taken today, but we didnt have much time.

this is where i grew up. just steps away from  the Buffalo River. see those train tracks.. you just never heard of any one getting run over by a train back then. and there is a neighborhood behind this building.

so on with the tour.

We started at the very beginning, and we r working our way downtown, to the “New Buffalo” water front.

On July 3, 2003, at the climax of a fiscal crisis, the Buffalo Fiscal Stability Authority was established[11] to oversee the finances of the city. As a “hard control board,” they have frozen the wages of city employees and must approve or reject all major expenditures. After a period of severe financial stress, Erie County, where Buffalo resides, was assigned a Fiscal Stability Authority on July 12, 2005. As a “soft control board,” however, they act only in an advisory capacity.[12] Both Authorities were established by New York State. In November 2005, Byron Brown was elected Mayor of Buffalo. He is the first African-American to hold this office.

Economic development in the city was marked at $3.5 billion in 2006 compared to the ten year previous average of $50 million[citation needed]. New proposals and renovations were numerous, especially in the downtown area. Buffalo ranked 83rd on the Forbes best cities for jobs list, an increase from the previous year, beating out cities like New York City, Cleveland, and Detroit.

there is actually a bike ferry, a 5 min. ride, that will take you across the river For $1.00 and a buck to come back over. to pedal all along the  Buffalo shore line(of Lake Erie). its pretty flat, and a very long stretch, most of it is built for bikes and pedestrians.

there  are lots of places to stop along the bike route for  bathroom breaks and  food or drink.

A Little Side Steppin

wow, it sucks to get old.. especially when your not very healthy.   as we become the “adults” for our aging parents,  we learn a lot.. some good some bad. we all have horror storied to tell, some more than others. so i wont get into that part of it.

i had to go help out , again, my Mom, who is 80 had yet another back surgery. this time a bit more invasive.. a rod and screws.. and 26 stitches. living all most 2 hours away can some times be challenging.. with rescheduling and well life in general.. but we  do what we can.. im thankful for the Help of my baby Sister and Her Husband, who live in Bflo,Ny.

so  i thought id share, with you what i saw from the 17th floor of Buffalo General Hospital, and what i did for 2 days.

the Dog Days of Summer……..Whaaaat?:(

I’m not sure where the summer went this year, but here it is the middle of August, and schools are opening already.its true I’m retired, but i still go by the school calendar, and i still get up at the crackA$$ of dawn., so while a take a break from my vacation to Florida, i went to spend the week-end with my good pal and her Hubby in Buffalo ,NY.. They always try to show me a good time and this past week-end was no different.

I’m always amazed at the construction going on in my Home Town, Lord knows Buffalonians have waited a long to see prosperity, and its finally happening. their down town has been revitalized into a destination place that is beyond any ones wildest dreams.

My Adventures in My Home Town.. continuing saga

as i continued my water journey  into History, looking at the old grain mills, , it made me remember when i was little  , and every man went to work, and every man …just about… stopped at the corner tavern on the way home..usually on Pay Day!!!   i swore when i grew up, i would leave that area, and never ever marry any one who worked at a grain mill, or a steel mill.

i did leave the area, first chance i got, and i did not marry anyone from the area.i still get home sick, and its been 38 years since leaving Buffalo, altogether.

on the Buffalo River, looking at the old silos, and office buildings. these will eventually all be turned into something of use, or torn down. as construction has already started on many of these .
high flyer
my brother in Law took me to a (new) beach, that was nothing but waste land when i lived there, it was something to see!! on this particular day, it was very windy, if you look closely you can see the man at the end of the kite:) and the wave he is attempting to surf
under the skyway
on my way back from the Historic tour, here we are underneath the SkyWay, to the right is downtown. and straight ahead is a war museum on the that ship and there’s another vessel there as well, but ill get into those at a later date.
time for lunch
time for lunch, this is Larkinville, it use to be all factory type . working class, and over the years as factories closed… most everything was boarded up. homes in this area couldn’t even get insurance on their homes. this area is called the Valley.. the lower part of Buffalo. through hard work and many grants, this is now an eating establishment, they have weekly concerts, and food truck rodeos. its one of my favorite places to go , when I’m down that way, it’s not far from the water. oh.. and that little building called the filling station… was once a gas station. well that does it for “My Nostalgia” today. have a great week-end and thanks for stopping by

Back to my Home Town…

this is what i saw most days growing up, the lake is around those silos. of course that park like feature wasn’t there then

you know the breakfast cereals? well they are made here, and on any given day you can smell the fragrance of oats any what ever else gets toasted and roasted all along the lower south side of Buffalo
DSC_8063undertheskyway_pe_pe
taking full advantage not too long ago, i took an Historic boat ride through the old grain mills that thing over head is the sky way.. that connected south Buffalo with Downtown and the west side of Buffalo. being so close to the lake this bridge was shut down on many winter days, due to high winds
DSC_8146
now the water is clean, all kinds of water activities take place. and some of the silos have been converted into all sorts of recreational things and a few restaurants

Buffalo, still receives many cargo ships , before the ships go onto the Welland canal. before summer is over i hope to be able to be in town when one is there

About My Hometown,   i grew up on the south side of Buffalo, just foot steps away from the lake. but when i was growing up, the waters were so contaminated.. well, it was just something to look at. So for this part of my Blog, Im going to navigate through  some of the old grain mills and some that are still in use…Like…General Mills.   when i come back ill share some of the things that anyone can see , when they come to town these days. thanks for stopping by, have a wonderful rest of the week . and Heres a little History i was able to dig up

South Buffalo has one of the highest concentrations of Irish Americans [1] west of the Hudson River outside of Chicago, many of whom settled in Buffalo after the completion of the Erie Canal, as well as the coming of the railroads and the industrial revolution later in the nineteenth century. Nevertheless, unlike many other American cities with large Irish-American populations, Buffalo, New York‘s southside Irish came to the USA relatively late when comparatively speaking. By far the largest concentrations came from the Irish Counties of Clare, Cork, Mayo and Wexford. A large percentage of South Buffalonians can trace their Irish ancestry to the area in and around the town of Kilrush in County Clare. Indeed, most were post-famine arrivals who were recruited to work the burgeoning steel mills, petroleum refineries, foundries, flour mills, automobile factories, and machine shops sprouting up in this highly industrialized city. Many more of South Buffalo’s Irish would wind up working in the ranks of the protective services for the Buffalo Police Department and Buffalo Fire Department. Others found jobs in the various unionized Building Trades, such as in the labor unions representing the Carpenters, Bricklayers, Iron Workers, and Operating Engineers.

My HomeTown

I grew up on the waterfront, just like the movie, with Marlon Brando..

the grain mills were always running, the tug boats were busy, the steel mills were in full production, every one worked.. well at least till the holidays, then most got laid off, for a few weeks .I grew up with hard-working middle class people, every one was catholic, and  Irish ..lol, except me..I’m Italian. but the times have changed and so has the part of Buffalo that I grew up in. For the Good, it is now a Tourists destination.  I’ve always been fond of going back home, but now I enjoy it even more… to be continued
